Description

AR1820HS – 18.1 MP Camera Module:

The AR1820HS – 18.1 MP Camera Module is based on the AR1820HS color sensor from ON Semiconductor. The sensor has a 1/2.3″ optical format, with the pixel size of 1.25 µm x 1.25 µm, provides the 18.1 MP 4912 x 3684 image. This is a rolling shutter sensor, which captures an entire column (or row) simultaneously, so the sensor compiles the image by scanning across (or down).

Lens / Mounts:

This camera module is sold bundled with the M12 M27280M07S lens and metal mount (B0164). It is also available without a lens – just a 10 mm metal lens mount to protect the sensor during shipping. Available separately are other metal M12 or CS lens mount. Note: This module is only available with the IR filter on the sensor, so the NoIR option is not possible!

The key benefit of the standard lens mounts available with this module is the simplicity in swapping the lens – fisheye, wide-angle, telephoto, zoom, IR or NoIR filter – all of which are available from DLSCorp. Click on the Camera Lenses product category for the complete selection of ArduCAM lenses. Be sure to note the compatible lens mount height (7 mm, 10 mm, 14.5 mm, etc.) for each lens selected if you chose an M12 metal mount option. Note, each lens purchased separately comes with its appropriate height lens mount (plastic for M12, metal for CS), so you may choose to purchase the camera with only a generic plastic lens mount (to protect the sensor). Click on the Camera Lens Mounts product category for information about lens mounts, including compatibility with the various lenses.

Camera Shields:

In the Arduino world, a “shield” is a piggy-back circuit board that provides additional functionality to the development board. In this context, a camera shield provides the required interface from the camera module to your computer. You may choose to create your own custom-built hardware interface via the 22-pin 0.5 mm pitch interface. Or, you will need to purchase the ArduCAM MIPI Adapter Board for USB3.0 Camera Shield and the ArduCAM USB3.0 Camera Shield, (or just the new ArduCAM USB 2 Rev E Camera Shield) which provides you a USB connection to a Windows or Linux computer for this camera module. Open-source software and binaries are provided on the ArduCAM GitHub site (see link below) for these boards. ArduCAM supplies a wide variety of camera modules that are compatible with their USB Camera Shields, and all are available from DLSCorp.

Raspberry Pi Interface:

In addition to working with the USB camera shields, the camera module is a custom-designed add-on for the Raspberry Pi system boards. The board itself is tiny, at around 40 mm x 40 mm. The camera is connected to the BCM2835 processor on the Pi via the CSI bus. The CSI bus is capable of extremely high data rates, and it carries pixel data exclusively. A 15-pin flexible flat cable (FFC) connects the camera to the CSI socket on the Raspberry Pi; additional lengths of the FFC cables are also available (a CSI/DSI Extender is required). Unlike the 5 and 8 MP cameras, this camera module requires special MIPI software available from the ArduCAM GitHub site.

The camera is supported in the latest version of Raspbian, Raspberry Pi’s preferred operating system.
